POSITION: Accountant I

DEPARTMENT: Finance

BASE RATE: $28.00 per hour, with potential for additional compensation based on qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position is responsible for accounting and financial management functions for Upper Peninsula Managed Care and Upper Peninsula Healthcare Solutions in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Assists Controller with financial reporting required by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Follows established Upper Peninsula Health Plan, LLC (UPHP) policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.
 
2. Assists in the development and maintenance of accounting processes and internal controls for Upper Peninsula Managed Care, LLC (UPMC) and Upper Peninsula Healthcare Solutions (UPHCS).
 
3. Ensures accurate recording of financial transactions into the general ledger.
 
4. Completes month-end processes including general ledger account reconciliations and financial statement preparations with adherence to accuracy.
 
5. Completes workpaper preparation and records journal entries.  
 
6. Supports departmental directors and the Controller in both annual company-wide and monthly budget reviews.  
 
7. Responsible for invoicing, posting, verifying, and recording customer payments and transactions related to accounts receivable. 
 
8. Assists with external audit workpaper preparation and data support.
 
9. Assists Accountant II, as needed, with the timely filing of financial reports, payroll related reporting, and regulatory tax reports.
 
10. Responsible for fixed asset tracking and reporting.
 
11. Conducts monthly reconciliation of membership payments for Medicaid lines of business, including Maternity Case Rate (MCR) payments. 
 
12. Assists the Senior Accountant with special projects as needed.
 
13. Maintains confidentiality of client data.
 
14. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  

Minimum:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or combination of education and experience
 

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting
 

Experience: 

Minimum:    
Working knowledge of basic accounting principles and/or one (1) to two (2) years of experience in a business office environment performing accounting-related functions

Preferred:

Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in a business office environment performing accounting-related functions; experience in an automated general ledger environment
 

Required Skills:

Keyboarding proficiency
Working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
Good human relations and oral/written communication skills
Good organizational skills with ability to prioritize

Ability to effectively communicate across multiple departments

Ability to adhere to deadlines and multitask effectively

Working Conditions:

Position available onsite (in Marquette, Michigan), fully remote, or hybrid with a remote work option up to three (3) days per week
Works in office conditions, but occasional travel is required
Subject to interruptions
Requires exceptional interpersonal and productivity skills
Occasionally subjected to irregular hours

 

Remote Work Requirements:

Remote candidates must reside in the state of Michigan.
For fully remote team members, initial on-site/in-person onboarding and training for a minimum of ten (10) consecutive business days at UPHP’s headquarters in Marquette, Michigan (stipend provided).
Travel to UPHP’s headquarters for trainings and meetings as required.
Private home office required; computer and phone hardware provided.
Personal vehicle required for periodic travel; mileage reimbursement provided at GSA rate.
